EmberMap

Heatmaps for WordPress · Self-hosted

See where they click. Send nothing anywhere.

EmberMap records click, scroll, movement and attention heatmaps directly inside your WordPress database. No cookies, no third-party analytics service, no session replay — your visitors' behaviour never leaves the server you already run.

Where the data goes

Most heatmap tools are a pipe to someone else's server.

That is the part worth understanding before you install anything. A hosted analytics tool ships your visitors' behaviour to infrastructure you don't control, under a privacy policy you didn't write. EmberMap removes that hop entirely.

Typical hosted heatmap

Your data takes a trip

Visitor Your site Vendor cloud Sub-processors

Every hop is another party to disclose, another agreement to sign, and another place your visitors' behaviour exists after you delete it.

EmberMap

Your data stays put

Visitor Your WordPress database

The tracking script posts to your own site. Storage is your existing database. There is no EmberMap server in the path, because there is no EmberMap server.

Inside the plugin

It renders over your actual page, inside your actual admin.

No separate app to log into and no data to export anywhere. You pick a page, a heatmap type, a device and a date range, and the overlay is drawn on the live page itself.

Click heatmap. The primary call to action is taking most of the attention; the secondary button beside it is running a distant second.
EmberMap scroll depth heatmap: a warm-to-cool gradient down the page with a marker showing the 25 percent scroll depth line.
Scroll depth. Colour cools as visitors drop off, with markers at each depth milestone so you can see what sits below the fold most people never reach.

What you get

Four heatmap types, plus the friction they reveal.

01

Click heatmaps

Where visitors actually click, snapped to a grid and weighted by frequency. Filter by desktop, tablet or mobile.

02

Scroll depth

How far down the page people get before they leave, so you can see what sits below the point most visitors stop.

03

Movement & attention

Cursor movement and dwell, aggregated into the regions of a page that hold attention longest.

04

Rage clicks

Repeated frustrated clicking in one spot — usually something that looks interactive and isn't.

05

Dead clicks

Clicks on elements that do nothing at all. Often the fastest usability win on any page.

06

Element rankings

Your most-clicked elements in order, so the comparison between a hero button and the nav is a number, not a guess.

07

Funnel tracking

The paths visitors take between your pages, and where they drop out of the route you intended.

08

Bot filtering

Automated traffic is excluded before it is stored, so your heatmaps reflect people rather than crawlers.

Privacy posture

Written to be accurate, not reassuring.

No cookies and no tracking identifiers. EmberMap does not set a cookie or assign a persistent visitor ID to collect heatmap data.

No IP addresses in heatmap data. Heatmap records contain coordinates, viewport size and device class. Where the security audit log records an event, it stores a salted, non-reversible hash of the IP rather than the address itself — not the same claim as "we store nothing", which is why we don't make it.

No session replay. EmberMap does not record or reconstruct individual browsing sessions. It aggregates.

Do Not Track is respected, and there is a consent API so a GDPR consent banner can gate tracking on or off.

Optional safeguards mode adds encryption at rest, an append-only audit log, de-identification, session timeouts and URL sanitisation for teams working under stricter internal requirements.

What this is not. EmberMap provides technical and privacy features that can support your compliance work. It does not make your site or organisation compliant with any law or framework, and nothing here is legal advice. HIPAA additionally requires Business Associate Agreements, written policies and a risk analysis; GDPR requires a lawful basis and data-processing agreements. You remain responsible for assessing what your own configuration collects — personal data in page URLs, for example — and for meeting your obligations. Consult a qualified attorney or compliance professional.

Questions

Before you buy

What exactly am I purchasing?

A subscription licence key for EmberMap Pro, a plugin for self-hosted WordPress sites. After payment you receive a licence key by email, which you enter in the plugin to unlock the Pro features listed above. It is software you install on your own site — there is no hosted service and no data is sent to us.

What are the system requirements?

Self-hosted WordPress 6.0 or newer, and PHP 8.0 or newer. EmberMap will not run on WordPress.com's lower plans, which do not permit custom plugins.

How does billing work, and can I cancel?

Pro is billed monthly at $12 USD and renews automatically until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from the customer portal linked in your purchase receipt, or by emailing us. Cancelling stops all future charges; your licence keeps working until the end of the period you have already paid for.

What is your refund policy?

If EmberMap Pro is not right for you, email support@embermap.io within 14 days of your first payment and we will refund it in full. You do not need to give a reason.

For renewals after that first period, contact us and we will look at it case by case — if something is broken on our side, you get your money back.

What happens to my data if I cancel or uninstall?

It is your data in your database, so it stays exactly where it is. If you cancel Pro, the plugin reverts to free-tier behaviour. If you delete the plugin, EmberMap removes its own tables, options and scheduled tasks on uninstall.

Does EmberMap slow my site down?

The visitor-facing tracking script is small — under 5 KB — and events are batched rather than sent per interaction. All heatmap rendering happens in the WordPress admin, not on the pages your visitors load.

Do I need a cookie banner for this?

EmberMap sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses in heatmap data, which is a large part of what usually triggers that requirement. Whether you need consent still depends on your jurisdiction and everything else running on your site, so treat this as a starting point for that conversation rather than an answer to it. A consent API is included so you can gate tracking behind an existing banner if you want to.

Is it really GPL?

Yes. EmberMap is licensed GPLv2 or later, like WordPress itself. Your subscription pays for updates, licence-key access to Pro builds, and support.
